POLOKWANE – During the last council meeting of the Polokwane Municipality on 31 January, it was proposed a task team be set up to look at the municipal debt, as the debt was “spiralling out of control”, according to opposition members.

Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng, said the task team may comprise 10 members, including an administrative and political component. She added the team will not investigate the Mangkweng debt specific but look at the overall debt of the municipality.
The debtor’s book stood at R840,035 million as at 31 October. Households formed the bulk of the debtors with debt of R683,827 million, commercial debt stood at R115,082 million and organs of state at R38,885 million. The remainder comprised other debts.
According to a report before council for the period ending 31 October 2017, municipal revenue performance stood at 40%, expenditure performance at 31% and capital performance equalled 22% of the capital budget for 2017/18.
