Three suspects arrested for operating bogus college in Polokwane

The trio of suspects will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court today on charges of fraud.

POLOKWANE – With the beginning of the year marking the release of matric results and first year enrollment at tertiary institutions, police spokesperson Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe says it is common for parents and youth to fall prey to bogus colleges or institutions, taking advantage of their desperation for an education.

“Police in Limpopo are cautioning prospective students to look out for the existence of bogus educational institutions within the Polokwane CBD,” he said.

This comes after three suspects were arrested on Thursday, found to be operating a bogus ‘Training College’. They were arrested during a special operation by the Provincial Firearm, Liquor and Second Hand Goods Control (FLASH), targeting illegal firearm training colleges in and around Polokwane.

“The suspects would issue certificates under an unregistered training college, operating at the Indian Centre, under the name ‘Multi Firearm Training”, Ngoepe said.

He went on to urge prospective students to visit the Department of Education to verify, through a list of registered colleges, before enrolling.

“We call upon all victims, who were issued with these bogus certificates, to urgently contact Colonel Schalk van Schalk Wyk on 082 565 7807 or to go to the Polokwane Police Station or the nearest police station.”
