Racial segregation investigated at medical practice in Mokopane
The Department of Health issued a media statement declaring it was highly disturbed by the allegations of racism practised by a private doctor in Mokopane.
LIMPOPO – “The department vowed to work closely with the South African Human Rights Commission, the national Department of Health and the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in making sure matters like this don’t have space in a democratic SA. We will not leave a stone unturned,” Spokesperson for the department, Derick Kganyago, said.
The Human Rights Commission said in a media statement it will sit down with a Limpopo doctor to persuade him to stop discriminating between patients on the basis of colour. Failing that, the commission will take him to court. Investigators from the commission, who visited the doctor’s practice in Mokopane on Wednesday, found there were separate consultation rooms and bathrooms for white and black patients.
SAHRC investigator, Victor Mavhidula, said what is happening there is clear discrimination. He added the practice created two receptions, one for white and the other for black people. There were also separate diaries being used with regard to appointments for white people and appointments for black people, he added.
