Boxers ready to step into ring

The department of sport, arts and culture says it aims to restore the status of boxing in the province.

POLOKWANE – The department of sport, arts and culture says it aims to restore the status of boxing in the province.

This will be in the form of a female lightweight boxing tournament that is scheduled for March 17 at the Nirvana community hall.

The tournament will feature Bukiwe Nonina, the defending South African female lightweight boxing champion. The boxing challenge will form part of the Mapungubwe Festival.

Khathu Sadiki, the spokesperson for the department of sport, arts and culture says the department is hosting the tournament after they realised that the future of boxing in the province is at stake.

“We believe that young people and potential boxers will be motivated by the tournament and not get disillusioned. We also aim to promote female boxing tournaments to encourage women to take part in the sport. The department wants to restore the status of boxing in the province, focusing on the interests of the boxer,” says Sadiki.

The tournament will start at 19:00 and tickets cost R30.
