Fake municipal officials rob family in Makhado

Police in Makhado have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.

LIMPOPO – Police spokesperson Constable Tshifhiwa Radzilane says two unknown suspects robbed a family after pretending to be employees from the Makhado local municipality, responsible for water meter readings.

Radzilane explains that the first two suspects allegedly entered a premises in Louis Trichardt, on Monday, 15 January, at 10:00 am, wearing blue overalls pretending to be on duty checking water meters in the area.

“They then left after telling the victims they would return to fix the meter as it was dysfunctional.”

The following day, Tuesday, 16 January, two different suspects, also wearing blue overalls and pretending to be municipal workers, entered the same premises and told the victims they were there to fix the meter readings.

“When shown the entrance, the duo accosted the complainants, produced firearms and demanded money. When this failed, the suspects pounced on two of the complainants, grabbed their necklaces and fled on foot. No shots were fired,” Radzilane says.

Police in Makhado are therefore warning communities to be vigilant and always demand identification before granting any person access to their premises.

“Police are appealing to anyone with information or who knows the whereabouts of these suspects to contact the nearest police station or call the crime stop number 08600 10 111,” Radzilane concluded.

Police investigations are continuing.
