Awaiting trial prisoner escapes from lawful custody after court appearance in Lebowakgomo

The police in Lebowakgomo have launched a search operation for a 22-year-old suspect who escaped from lawful custody while being escorted to the police holding cells on Wednesday, 10 January 2018.

LIMPOPO – Police Spokesperson, Constable Maphure Manamela explained: “It is alleged that the court orderlies booked out prisoners to Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court at about 08:30 that morning. After the court proceedings, the prisoners were escorted back to the  police station in a police van. Upon arrival at the station the police opened the vehicle to escort the prisoners back to the holding cells when the said suspect escaped and vanished into the nearby bushes.The escape occurred at around 13:30 and he was been sought since then.”

The suspect from Zimbabwe, identified as Brian Madoda, was previously arrested under the illegal immigration Act, she added.
