Illegal cigarette smuggler convicted by Limpopo court

The convicted man was found to be in possession of R176 250 worth of illegal goods

LIMPOPO – David Wasu found guilty for smuggling illicit cigarettes into the Republic of South Africa by the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 27 December 2017.

According to Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke, the accused was arrested after police officers responded to a tip-off given about a man in possession of illegal cigarettes and dagga at Klippan farm in Tom Burke.

 

When searching the man’s room the officers seized 4x boxes of Kingdom Master cigarettes, 4x boxes of Pacific Blue cigarettes, 2x boxes of Dullahs Master cigarettes, 1x box of Rimington Gold and one plastic bag containing dagga with the estimated street value of R176 250.

The matter was referred to the Hawks for further investigation and it resulted in a successful conviction and sentencing of the accused. Wasu was sentenced to pay R20 000 or three years imprisonment and another three months imprisonment.
