ATM cash custodian arrested in connection with Burgersfort ATM robbery

The incident occurred on Saturday 16 December 2017

LIMPOPO –  The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit members have arrested an ATM custodian in connection with the robbery of over R400 000 from an ATM at a Total filling station in Burgersfort.

According to Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Matimba Maluleke the incident happened on 16 December 2017 at around 03:00, when two men stormed the room which houses the ATM cubical door.

“The men started a fire in the petrol attendants room before they fled the scene, however when the fire was extinguished, it was discovered that money was stolen from the ATM although it was not tampered with,” explained Maluleke.

The matter was referred to the Hawks for further investigation which led to the arrest of the suspect.

Maluleke confirmed that during his arrest, R100 000 cash was found in his possession.

The suspects has since appeared before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court on 21 December 2017 where he was remanded in custody until 27 December 2017 for formal bail application.

The investigation on the matter is still on, concluded Maluleke.
