Grooming cricketers of tomorrow

To thank them for their dedication throughout the year, Limpopo Impalas Cricket Union (LIC) held its annual capping ceremony for Limpopo’s boys and girls teams.

POLOKWANE -This ceremony was held on Friday, 24 November at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex.

The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is the highlight of all these national schools’ cricket tourneys during the December summer holiday as it is at this tournament where South Africa’s future cricket heroes are made.

This u/19 cricket tournament will see over 200 of the top young players from around the country and Namibia, battle it out in an action-packed week. This year, the tournament returns to Johannesburg and will take place from 17 to 21 December.

The u/19 girls team from Limpopo Impala Cricket. They were among several learners who attended this cricket union’s annual capping ceremony for its provincial teams. This team’s tournament was in Port Elizabeth from 10 to 15 December.

This tournament, which is synonymous in showcasing the best in the country’s up and coming youth cricket talent, has produced more than 80 Proteas since South Africa’s readmission into the international cricket arena.

The recently capped Protea, Wiaan Mulder, captained Gauteng at the 2016 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week when he returned to the tournament for a third year in a row. In the same year, the all-rounder was promoted to franchise cricket and played his maiden game for the Bizhub Highveld Lions.

“The aim of Cricket South Africa (CSA) is to be the best cricket playing nation in the world, to achieve this each level of the pipeline needs to play its strategic part,” commented CSA General Manager, Corrie van Zyl.

“Schools cricket has always been the backbone of the pipeline and it is important that this remains the case,” Van Zyl adds.
