Shumba takes tourism, nature by the horns

Break away from what is viewed as the norm in terms of holiday destinations and activities and take the path less travelled, advises Director of Shumba and the Safaris, Jabulani Shumba

POLOKWANE – On a mission to keep the community entertained this festive season, Director of Shumba and the Safaris, Jabulani Shumba, maintains people need to get into the habit of travelling so they can learn more about other cultures.

“Growing up, I remember during my school days, I never missed a camping trip. I have always had a a love and passion for travelling and nature.

“My grandfather, who worked for the Department of Environment and Tourism, contributed a lot to my profession and career as a tourist guide as well as a professional hunter. I used to go with him into the wild to hunt and fish and so my passion and love for nature grew,” Shumba explained.

Shumba and the Safaris offers accommodation, set itineraries, customised tours, adventure activities, wildlife encounters, cultural experiences, social interventions, school and corporate tours, game drives and lion tours.

Even though he may now be at the peak of his career, the road leading to this wasn’t without a few bumps. “I started at the very bottom where I was working for a travel and tourism company. Here I learned a lot about the tourism industry and have now merged with Africadiction where we recruit, train and equip individuals who are interested in the travel and tourism industry with the knowledge they need to become professional tourist guides. I personally drive all my clients around during the tours because I believe the whole point of these tours are to take your time while taking and learning about the different places and nature.

“There are lots of places to visit here in Limpopo, such as Wild Things as well as Villa Marula Lodge and the likes,” he explained.

He encouraged others to break away from what is viewed as the norm in terms of holiday destinations and activities and take the path less travelled. He particularly encouraged the youth to venture into careers that are not regarded as traditional career paths such as engineering and medicine.

“Being a tourist guide allows you to get in touch with nature and different cultures,” he concluded.
