Wiers murder: One suspect released

The two suspects in the Tanya Wiers (44) murder appeared in court on Thursday, 9 November.

POLOKWANE – During their court appearance, the public prosecutor said one of the suspects, Alfred Hlongoane, would no longer be prosecuted and he was released from custody.

The suspect still in custody, Frans Maela, stands accused of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances after Wiers was found murdered in her Eduan Park home on 6 February by her son, Rolf, on returning home from school. Her body was found in in one of the rooms, naked with multiple stab wounds to the neck and under the chin. Both of her eyes had been removed with a sharp object.

Maela, the neighbour’s gardener, was arrested later the same day. He implicated Hlongoane, who was subsequently arrested, in his affidavit.

Both suspects were denied bail and were remanded in custody.

Following their court appearance on Thursday, Hlongoane was released while Maela was remanded in custody.

The trial will continue in the Limpopo High Court on 26 February.

Wiers’ husband, Rolf, said he didn’t attend the court proceedings on Thursday and only found out Hlongoane would not be prosecuted on social media.

When asked about the trial, he said he wishes the law to run its course.
