POLOKWANE – There is a new exercise and training programme in the city. Originating in the US in 2003, CrossFit opened in Polokwane about two years ago.

Called CrossFit Firebox, the CrossFit gym in Polokwane is under the guidance of Franco Rabé and is situated at Bon Marque Gym. It is affiliated to the international body CrossFit, which is also a registered trademark.

CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning programme to elicit a broad adaptation response by means of constant, varied, functional or rather natural movements which are performed at high intensity or within a certain time limit.

The founder of CrossFit, American Greg Glassman says the aim of CrossFit is to optimise physical competence in 10 recognised fitness domains.

These domains are balance and accuracy, agility, coordination, speed, power, flexibility, strength, stamina, respiratory endurance and the cardiovascular system (also known as the circulatory system). This all translates to better overall fitness, functional strength and overall preparedness.

Rabé says exercising these natural movements enables a person to reach any fitness result they wish to enhance.

These natural movements are standing, sitting, throwing, pushing, pulling, lifting and running, which are according to Rabé the core ingredients for a healthier, fitter and stronger person. He says there is no age restriction and anyone can participate for a better and healthier lifestyle.

One of the participants at CrossFit Firebox, Janine Prinsloo recently competed in the Fittest Woman and Man competition in Stellenbosch. Last year, Polokwane contestant in this competition, Charl Liversage achieved a third place overall in the men’s division.

Prinsloo, who achieved second place overall in this year’s competition accumulated a total of 707 points, not too far adrift from the winner, Lara Erlank’s winning score of 715 points. Third place went to Mona Pretorius, who finished on 677 points.

“I really aimed for any place in the top five, but I am very happy to achieve a second place. The competition was quite tense.

“I have been involved with CrossFit for a year and six months only, and since I have started to participate in CrossFit, I have come to realise that I am even more agile than before, so it definitely enhanced my fitness levels, stamina and overall performance,” says Prinsloo.

Liversage and Rabé also competed in the competition and both scored equal points of 349 points. They finished in 13th place out of the 24 entries.
