Sewela proves practice makes perfect

This self-taught make-up artist's work speaks for itself

POLOKWANE – Sewela Mofomadi is a young entrepreneur who has shown that determination and passion is all you need to succeed.

The 23-year-old, originally from Botlokwa, now resides in Emdo Park and says she has always been a lover of all things beautiful.

“Nature and beautiful, rich colours fascinate me, they grab my attention instantly. I also love being neat and organised. When I fell in love with make-up I practiced on my friends to perfect my craft. Soon I began collecting make-up essentials I needed to use daily, on myself and on my friends. I first became a make-up assistant and I helped Nomzami Dlamini from Joyous Celebration and Carol Seabi from Glamfair before striking out on my own as a make-up artist,” she explains.

Sewela is a chemical plant operations student at Capricorn TVET college and says establishing yourself and your brand in the fashion and beauty industry is challenging and needs a lot of patience and hard work. First you need to learn the basics of applying make-up – the right colours and shades to use to suit certain skintones as well as learn more about the various complexions.

“Challenges I have faced since becoming a professional make-up artist include working with clients who have deep scarring on their faces as it takes a bit more practice to apply make-up and blend it so their scars are less visible. You have to know how to balance that as well because you don’t want to apply too much make-up and have them looking like circus performers at the end of the day. Eyebrows are another challenging factor as people’s eyebrows differ and you have to know which types of eyebrows will best suit the client’s face. Walk-in clients who want immediate service without an appointment is another pitfall as you have to do everything in a rush but still have them look picture-perfect. Applying make-up is a technique which needs time and patience,” she adds.

“As a professional in the beauty and fashion industry it is important for me to keep up with what is trending and what is not so I can offer my clients the best service. Keeping up-to-date and self-assured also makes my clients feel more at ease that they are in good hands.”

Sewela’s make-up tips:

• Daylight make-up must be as neutral as possible, also, go easy on the brighter colours during the day when it comes to eye-shadow. More dramatic looks, such as a smokey eye, work best in the evenings.

• For the lips go for a deep rich matte colour this season as it is trending. Colours such as burgundy wine, seductive dark purple, raspberry, red fox and impatient pink among others.

• You can play around with colours for your evening out make-up to your hearts content.

She highly recommends a good skincare regime to ensure your skin is well taken care of and moisturised. It is also good to go without make-up every once in a while to let your skin breathe so it can remain healthy, she advises.
