Slam dunk poetry to unite the youth

The "Silver-Spoon' campaign will host a poetry slam event on 8 July at Peter Mokaba stadium.

POLOKWANE – For Tshegofatjo Raisibe Molepo(20) and Priscilla Makama (19), helping people heal and overcome obstacles, have lead the duo to join the NGO called AWYL(African Women and Youth League) in Polokwane, to help make a difference in the community.

The two young women have started an initiative called the “Silver-spoon” campaign, with the aim of empowering the youth and offering a helping hand where possible to those who struggle to gain access to information and the knowledge they need to succeed in life.

The NGO will host a Poetry Slam event on Saturday, 8 July at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. The event is aimed at gathering all the youth in the province under one roof to help grow the “Sliver-spoon” initiative.

Tshegofatjo, who is from Seshego, Zone 8, is currently pursuing a qualification in Chattered Accountancy at the University of the North West Province and almost 20-year-old Priscilla Makama, also from Seshego, is currently in her her second year studying towards an LLB at the University of Limpopo.

The two say that their aim is to help people heal with reference to their personal social issues that they come across. “I have always wanted to help someone to overcome an obstacle which they deem impossible to overcome, and also as a way of giving back to the community,” said Molepo.

Formerly known as African Housewives League (AHL), AWYL, now engages the youth on their platforms with a motto of ‘working hand in hand with the youth to help tack and curb social and economic issues that the community faces’.

Tshegofatjo and Priscilla’s first beneficiary is a family from Ga-Mashashane whose house burned down. The duo say they are hoping to help the family with things like furniture as their old one burned out by the fire.

The NGO also funds members within the organisation to further their studies in a quest to give back to the community.

Molepo is a poet at heart and has a blog where she showcases her work. The link to her blog is https://sanelytranquil.wordpress.com/
