Edu Department urges parents to register for the 2018 school year

Admission will take place from 18 April to 31 May for the 2018 academic year.

POLOKWANE – Department of Education Spokesperson, Dr Naledzani Rasila, urged all parents and guardians to collect registration forms from the schools nearest to their home or work address to register their children.

“Parents and guardians of children going to school for the first time or children who are moving to a new school must collect registration forms as soon as possible. These forms must be completed and returned to the schools as a matter of extreme urgency, particularly in the urban areas, because they have a great demand for admission of learners,” Rasila urged.

Parents are advised to bring the following documents when registering their child:

• Birth certificate or acceptable proof of birth date (not a baptismal certificate).

• Immunisation card.

• Transfer card.

• Last report card.

If you are not a South African citizen, you must also bring the following documents:

• Parents’ study /work permit.

• Temporary or permanent residence permit from South African Department of Home Affairs.

• Evidence that you have applied for permission to stay in South Africa.

Registering for Gr R, a child must be four years old and turning five in June this year, for Gr 1 a child must be five years and turning six in June this year.

Rasila said experience has shown that some parents who ignore the call to register their children before the closing date run around to schools at the beginning of the new year seeking to register their children only to be turned away because the schools are full.
