Vandalism of local schools a cause for concern

Theft and vandalism at schools across the city has increased at an alarming rate since the beginning of the year.

POLOKWANE – One of the targeted schools, Pietersburg-Noord Primary, has reported break-ins at the school with classrooms being broken into almost every weekend.

School Principal, Attie Visagie says the criminals steal items that are easily sold and easy to carry off the premises.

“We have reported the break-ins to the police who say investigations are underway,” he told Review.

Two other schools that have been vandalised since schools closed last year say they have had to spend a lot of money on fixing and replacing broken doors and windows.

“These are unforeseen and unnecessary expenses. It infuriates us that people continue to vandalised and rob schools that are struggling financially and cannot afford to make repairs,” another school principal said.

Police Spokesperson Lesiba Ramoshaba confirmed that cases of theft and vandalism are under investigation and urged the community to report crimes to the police.

“It is only with the help of the community that we can fight crime. Damage to property is a serious offence and perpetrators may be fined and even face jail time,” Ramoshaba said.

“Criminals often break-in and steal smaller items they can sell to fund their drug addiction or other more sinister crimes. It is therefore imperative that any crime be reported to the police,” he concluded.
