Police investigating 2 stabbings, assault

Police in the province are investigating three cases of murder, two in Ga-Sekgopo Village outside Modjiadjiskloof and one in Relela Village outside Tzaneen, say the police.

LIMPOPO -All three incidents, one mob related and two liquor related, happened between Saturday night and Sunday morning said provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

29-year-old man, Kabelo Mathe, believed to have been involved in the stabbing a 27-year-old man the previous evening was assaulted by members of an angry mob in Ga-Sekgopo Village on Sunday morning. “Aubrey Maribatse was stabbed in the chest while attempting to stop people from fighting on Saturday night at around 23:30. Mathe was declared dead on arrival at the clinic,” explained Ngoepe.

The community members tracked the accused and assaulted the 29-year-old man with various objects until the police arrived and rescued him from the angry mob. He was also declared dead on arrival at a nearby clinic.

No arrests have been made as yet.

Meanwhile in Relela Village a 26-year-old man arrested for the murder of 29-year-old man, Joseph Mhlongo, who was stabbed to death at a tavern in the early hours of Sunday morning. The suspect will appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Monday on the charge of murder.

The Provincial Commissioner Lt General Ledwaba has once again made a urgent appeal to the owners of the liquor outlets to run their bussinesses responsibly and to ensure that taverns are not becoming crime generators. He also reiterated his call to all members of the community to stop taking the law in their own hands but they rather arrest or inform the Police about any suspected person instead of assaulting or killing them.  He urged all communities to participate effectively in all community based crime prevention initiatives and strategies such as community Police forums and Sector Policing.

He concluded by warning everybody involved in this illegal acts that no stone will be left unturned in making sure that those responsible are brought to book.
