Weekend fires keep WOF teams busy

Working on Fire (WOF) team members had a busy weekend as they battled multiple fires across Limpopo.

LIMPOPO – WOF fire fighters were dispatched on Friday 19 August to contain wildfires that were busy destroying Limpopo’s pictures nature. Team Makhado was dispatched on Friday to suppress a wildfire near Mailula village after the Makhado Fire Protection Association (FPA) requested help from the team. Nineteen fire fighters worked endlessly and with great skill to help save the environment.

On Sunday morning 21 August both the Modimolle and Alma teams were dispatched to a fire just outside Modimolle. In both reported fires there were no fatalities, but the cause of both fires is still unknown.

“As we’ve just entered the peak of the 2016 winter fire season, we are pleading with the communities and land owners to refrain from starting fires, more especially in areas where these fires might spread. We are still in danger considering the dryness of the vegetation across the province. We are working closely with the municipality, FPA’s, Land owners and Government Departments to help create awareness in communities. We must all take responsibility to protect the environment. Our fire fighters are also assisting landowners to implement integrated fire management which includes creating fire breaks, block burns, fire belts and stalk burns. Let us work together to help protect the environment,” Provincial Spokesperson for WOF, Matema Ngwangwa concluded.
