Safety tips to prevent ATM theft

Over the weekend, two Polokwane residents were victims of an ATM theft.

POLOKWANE – Both victims stated their bank cards were switched while they used an ATM in the city and all the money in their accounts was withdrawn.

BONUS asked Provincial Police Spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, what residents should do to protect themselves and their money when using an ATM.

“Always be alert and aware of your surroundings,” she advises. “Never, under any circumstances, give your card or PIN to anyone, be especially wary of people offering assistance at an ATM,” she continues.

She says it is important not to write your PIN on the card or anything that is kept with the card. She urges residents to not insert their card into the ATM until prompted to do so by the message on the screen.

“Never use an ATM with a blank screen as this is an indication that the machine might be tampered with. If the ATM is obscured from view or in a poorly lit area, avoid using it as this makes you an easy target for criminals. When entering your PIN, use your body as a shield so no one behind you can see you enter the digits.”

She adds that people should ensure they keep their hand over the card slot to keep anyone from switching their card with a fake.

“Never accept help from strangers. You should be wary of strangers asking for help. Remember, criminals work in teams – one to distract you while the other steals your card or money. If your card is retained (swallowed) by the ATM, it is advisable to phone your bank’s toll-free line immediately and stop your card. Never allow a bystander to call the toll-free line on your behalf, they could be tricking you into thinking your card has been stopped,” she advises.

Guards are there for your safety and are not permitted to assist you with your transaction. If you need help, ask a bank official. It is advisable to set a daily ATM withdrawal limit to avoid criminals withdrawing all the money in your account in the event of your card being stolen.
