Handy tips for all bikers gearing up for the rally season

Sapa Yopa President, Sarel Nong gives his his top tips for having fun, staying safe at big bike rallies.

POLOKWANE – Rally season for bikers is an opportunity to revel in all things bike-related. The bikers of Sapa Yopa Motorcycle Club travel long distances every year, attending different events across the country and even outside its borders.

BONUS spoke to Sapa Yopa President, Sarel Nong, and he gave us his top tips for having fun, staying safe, and managing your money at big bike rallies.

These include:

• First things first, be prepared.

Know where you’re going, when the event is taking place and plan your journey accordingly.

Book a room at a hotel early, ensure it’s close to where the rally is taking place.

“Some bikers consider camping near the event or, look into renting a house off of Craigslist with a group of friends. It may be cheaper,” says Nong.

• Check the weather forecast.

Everything happens outdoors so be prepared for all conditions.

• A lot takes place at rallies.

There are various stalls with people selling different things so it is best to make a list of what you want to see; that way you won’t get distracted.

• Get your bike serviced before you go on a long journey.

• Know your route and have check-in points along the way.

Stop to take a break and fill up your tank.

At the event:

• Do not park your bike just anywhere. Ensure it is visible and among other bikes. “Empty your saddlebags when you leave your bike unattended,” Nong adds.

• Bring a spare key, you may misplace your keys.

• Bring cash because not everyone takes credit cards.

• Use a map to help you navigate.

Nong says it is most important that wherever bikers go, they wear bright colours to make them more visible.

“Safety must always come first. Take care when traveling to and from rallies.” Nong concludes.
