Sizzling ‘Knight’ braai competition

Ryno Jardin, Nelmar Smit en Martinus Beukes are part of the Polokwane Toyota Knights and, in cooperation with the braai ninja, Dirk Liebenberg and Ballentino's they are hosting a braai competition every Monday for 13 Mondays.

POLOKWANE – The Toyota Knights are a non-profit organisation and to be a part of this elite group is an honour.

Each Knight has to do community projects within their group as well as individually.

“There will be teams (two people per team) participating every Monday from 17:00 to 21:00 after being capped as Knight braaiers,” Liebenberg explains.

Liebenberg is well known as the Braai King of Polokwane and he is one of the braai organisers.

“Each week the type of meat contestants will have to braai will be announced in Review.”

The contestants are not allowed to prepare anything at home and must prepare a main meal as well as a dessert on the fire. The braai-evenings will take place at Ballentino’s and the finalists will compete in a braai-off on Heritage Day, also known as National Braai Day, on 24 September. The winners will be announced on 26 September. Each team can bring along supporters who can enjoy refreshments at the bar at Ballentino’s as well as enjoy a different, specialised meal each week. This coming Monday it will be curry and rice for R49 per person.

Entry fee for each team is R2 500 and the prizes include R10 000 and a weekend for four at Protea Hotel The Ranch Resort with activities for the first place winner. The prize for second place is a RCI voucher for a week’s accommodation at any participating resort and R5 000 cash. The prize for third place is R2 500. The funds raised from the competition will be used by the Knights to aid the elderly at Martha Hofmeyer and Vergeet-My-Nie to start a greenhouse.

“Gardening is therapeutic and we decided to start a greenhouse for the elderly so they can socialise and spend some time outdoors. This in turn will help with self-sustainability in the community. There are pioneer farmers who will help to train the people involved with the project,” says Jardin.

The contestants so far are: Pro Brick & Pave, Blitz Paving, Boemo Brick & Pave, RE/MAX Northland, RealNet Polokwane, Seeff, Dura Projects, Woodstuff, Bradbury’s Auto Body, Prima Panelbeaters, MacGyver Autoshop, Kainos, Voorpos Makelaars, Sanlam, Mockford Farms, Hi-Q Middestad, PBG Bande, Hi-Q Ladine, and Betterlife.

The type of meat, a lamb cut, was determined with a draw.
