City’s arts theatre, a first for the province

The Department of Art has set aside R400 000 for a feasibility study to be done in acquiring the city's own theatre.

POLOKWANE – It would also be the first provincial theatre of its kind.

This was announced during the budget tabling of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture by the MEC, Nandi Ndalane last week.

A site has already been established for the envisioned project, but information on this could not be determined by the time of going to press.

In furthering the arts, the national department has already donated a film studio to the province, which will be ready for use in May.

Good news was also on the cards for Limpopo artists, as the MEC announced the annual Mapungubwe Festival will in this financial year not be restricted to one area, but will be held “across the length and breadth of the province in attracting artists”.

Motivated by the Limpopo artist Mmatema Moremi, who participated in Idols, the department will also initiate an I Can Sing competition in the year to come.

“We want to create a reservoir of artistic talent,” said Ndalane.

The department will partner with a major banking group in promoting the Arts in Schools programme.

Other highlights of the 2016/17 budget:

• R11 million will go towards the Provincial Archives Building to ensure full functionality.

• R115 million was set aside for library and information services.
