Young photographer sees the world from a different angle

Amber Young (18) is usually equipped with her camera and other photography equipment ready to take her next perfect shot.

POLOKWANE – Amber is a learner at Stanford Lake College and developed her love for photography four years ago. “A couple of my friends and I went to Namibia where we wanted to take some photos. There I picked up a camera for the first time and tried to take silhouette photos – and that is where I realised I can actually become a good photographer,” Amber says.

Amber grew to love photography so much she has started her own photography business; Amber Young Photography. She plans to pursue photography as a professional career after school.

“I would like to study at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography after school,” she says. She explains she loves photography because she can see everything from a different perspective. “People often see something just for what it is but as a photographer one can see there is much more; one can use different angles to make something more than it actually is,” she explains. Amber has taken photos at several events including Curro Heuwelkruin’s Valentine’s Ball and the Boabab Classic golf tournament as well as various engagement parties.

Even though she enjoys photography a lot, she says it has its challenges.

“You can never make everyone happy, sometimes people don’t appreciate your work because they don’t see the same as you, for example a picture that is beautiful to you can often be something different for someone else,” she explains. Nevertheless she enjoys the job and the challenges it brings. She admires the work of Sergio de Andrade and Two Mann Studio because she learnt a lot from them and, in her opinion, Two Mann Studio takes the best wedding photos.

Besides photography, Amber has completed her first aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) qualifications. “It is very satisfying to know you can save someone’s life, it is also important for me to create awareness about first aid, CPR and AED courses because many people have died in a situation where they could have been saved had the people around them known what to do,” she says. In line with this, she has another business which offers first aid, CPF and AED courses, known as Amber Young Training.
