Polokwane High Court now open for business

The Polokwane High Court is fully operational after the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Adv Michael Masutha, officially opened the court on Monday

POLOKWANE – The MEC of the Department of Transport, Safety, Security and Liaison, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana, who also represented the Limpopo Premier, Stanley Mathabatha, was among the guests who attended the opening. Other dignitaries included the Judge President for the Polokwane division, Ephraim Makgoba, the Judge President for the Gauteng division, Dunstan Mlambo, the Secretary General for the Office of the Chief Justice, Meme Sejose, the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Adv Shaun Abrahams, the Deputy Director of National Public Prosecutions, Nomgcobo Jiba, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Adv Ivy Tenga, representatives from the Bar Council, Legal Aid, Attorneys Profession, the regional Court President and Chief Magistrate of the District Court.

The minister welcomed all the personnel into the new building and senior officials of each division of the court had to present their state of readiness to the minister.

The purpose of the presentations was for the minister to identify what was still needed to ensure smooth operations at the High Court.

There are two sections of the high court, block A and B.

Block A consists of multiple regional High ourt rooms as well as 17 judges’ chambers.

Block B comprises seven floors of office space.

After the presentations, the minister and his guests visited one of the court rooms, where the judge president did a demonstration to show that the court was fully functional.

The minister inspected the criminal court to see that it worked and ready for operation.

The group then visited the holding cells, where the minister inspected the space and security of the cells.
