Case opened against senior traffic official after accident

On 31 December 2015, four bikers travelling in Vermikuliet Street to an end of year bike run and family day, were hit by a bakkie driven by a senior official at the city's traffic department.

POLOKWANE – On 31 December 2015, four bikers travelling in Vermikuliet Street to an end of year bike run and family day, were hit by a bakkie driven by a senior official at the city’s traffic department.

All four bikers, Melanie Combrinck, her husband Shaun, and their two friends, Christo and Presilla Brie sustained serious injuries during the accident. Injuries which include broken legs, knees and arms.

A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by the Polokwane police.

Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said because the accident occurred when the officer was off-duty, the municipality could not comment.

Police spokesperson, Captain Ntobeng Phala, reiterated that no one is above the law. “If we can arrest one of our own, it tells you that we can arrest anyone. The law is above all.”

Phala said if the case goes to court, the guilty party will be taken to court without any fear from the police’s side.

The officer, whose name is being withheld, was not available for comment at the time of going to print.
