Lim girls scoops 3rd place in SA rugby tourney

Mamarama girls' rugby team from Limpopo managed to claim position three after defeating Eastern Province 19-12 during the South African Schools National Championships that were held in Pretoria from 11 to 14 December.

POLOKWANE – Mamarama girls’ rugby team from Limpopo managed to claim position three after defeating Eastern Province 19-12 during the South African Schools National Championships that were held in Pretoria from 11 to 14 December.

The team could have played in the finals but lost the semi-final game 21-12 against Mpumalanga. Mamarama won two games and lost three during the tournament. According to the team head coach, Ignitious Semenya, his team played a beautiful game of rugby and he is happy with the effort they put into the tournament.

“The team could have qualified to play in the finals if they won the game against Mpumalanga. We recognised our mistakes and will plan and prepare for this year’s tournament accordingly. We received the bronze medal for third position but we will are aiming for gold this year,” explained Semenya.

He added that most provinces were represented by two teams in both boys and girls tournaments and this increased their chances of winning the tournament. Limpopo was represented by Hudson Ntsanwisi High School boys’ rugby team. The team also got an opportunity to compete for position three and four but lost the game to Free State.

Semenya further said Limpopo has talented players but they need to work on a few things to prepare themselves for the national tournament that will be held in Durban in December. The tournament is played by 21 teams.

He added that they would like to thank the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture for the support. “Our medical team was solid and very keen to assist the players on and off the field. They did a very good job and we are happy. We had our own ambulance from Limpopo on standby.”
