LIMPOPO OPEN: Fencers in Lim lunge, parry

POLOKWANE – Last weekend was marked as one for the Limpopo Fencing record books as the club hosted its very first National Fencing Rankings, named the Limpopo Open.

The event which was hosted at which took place at the University of Limpopo, saw fencers from all over South Africa arrive to compete. These included Olympic fencers, as well as Italian and American fencers.

The Limpopo fencers from Firebirds Fencing Club and Eresabel Fencing Club did not disappoint as a few of them made it to the top three in their categories.

The following scores saw Limpopo fencers make it to the top three:

• Women’s u/20 Épée:

1. Narania Bester.

2. Moné McCabe (Firebirds, Limpopo).

3. Kesia Mathews and Phakama Yantolo.

• Men’s Senior Sabre:

1. Joseph Maluleke.

2. Jeremy Saner.

3. Andrew Howitt (Eresabel, Limpopo) and Abraham Coetzee.

• Women’s u/17 Foil:

1. Kiandra Eaton.

2. Danica Opperman (Eresabel, Limpopo).

3. Moné McCabe (Firebird, Limpopo) and Alexandra Gibson.

• Women’s Junior Foil:

1. Isabel Pretorius.

2. Dnako Jozana.

3. Caylin Duncan (Firebirds, Fencing) and Moné McCabe (Firebrids, Fencing).

• Men’s Senior Foil:

1. Pasha Tychler.

2. Richard Barnes-Webb.

3. Charl Venter (Firebirds, Fencing) and Sefularo Manyane.

• Women’s Senior Épée:

1. Fiselle Vicatos.

2. Rona Schröder (Eresabel, Limpopo).

3. Aphiwe Tuku and Natania Bester.

• Men’s Foil u/17 Foil:

1. Gealan Word.

2. Hary Saner.

3. Eben Wagner (Eresabel, Limpopo) and Francois Campher.

There was also a referee exam, and Limpopo fencers Andrew Howitt, Jaycey Pinn, Emile Schröder and Gordon Pinn passed their national referee exams for Epee.
