Olifantspoort plant out of operation resulting in water shortage in and around city

Parts of the city are once again experiencing low pressure or no water due to the fact that the Olifantspoort Plant is out of operation says a municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene on Wednesday.

POLOKWANE – Parts of the city are once again experiencing low pressure or no water  due to the fact that the Olifantspoort Plant is out of operation says a municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene on Wednesday.

“The Olifantspoort plant is out of operation and not pumping water to Polokwane. The Lepelle Northern Water shut off the plant as a result of the abnormal high turbidity levels of the raw water that has been caused by recent rainfall.”

The reservoir levels are already very low and some areas in the high catchment may be affected explains Chuene.

The following areas will be affected by the shut down:

Ga-Maja, Ga-Chuene area and all the high catchment areas in Seshego.

All the high catchment areas in the city area that will be affected include Flora Park, Bendor, Nirvana, Ster Park, Thornhill, Ivy dale and Ivy Park.

The city is currently only receiving supply from the Ebenezer and from the boreholes therefore residents are warned to use water sparingly.

“The public is warned that the water that is available must not be used for watering gardens, washing cars or any other thing except for household use as this will worsen the reservoir levels.”

On Saturday 5 December, the Polokwane Municpality issued an alert for SEVERE WATER SHORTAGE.

The alert read: “water levels at all Polokwane Municipality’s reservoirs are critically low, with some of them already empty. The shortage follows a planned shutdown on Thursday by Lepelle Northern Water to allow for repairs on the Specon pipeline from the Olifantspoort Plant.”

“Repairs were completed by midnight on Thursday and normal pumping to Polokwane resumed immediately. Unfortunately the increased demand of water by consumers following the shutdown made it difficult for reservoirs to fill up enough for normal supply to resume in all areas.”

Residents in the affected areas can contact the municipality on 0152902376/2001/2002 for assistance.
