Shaun Mouton shares his passion for the game

POLOKWANE – Shaun Mouton (25) is a professional golfer with the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) and has a true passion for the sport.

Shaun is the head coach of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) Limpopo team and a coach at Sadie’s Golf Experience. He also works at the Polokwane Golf Club Pro Shop.

Review had the opportunity to talk to Shaun about his passion for golf and where it all began

“My dad and his friends spent a lot of time on the fairway and when I was around 10 years old, I decided to give golf a try.

“It did not take long for me to fall in love with the sport.”

When he was younger, he trained under the well-known golf coach, Ray Earle, but as he got older, he started training under Jean Sadie.

“I really enjoy golf a lot, you get to spend time outdoors, basking in the beauty of nature. You also get to explore a variety of golf courses and meet new people on the fairway.

“I also enjoy the friendly competition on the golf course to beat your opponent,” Shaun smiled.

Since Shaun started coaching at Sadie’s Golf Experience, he has learnt a lot about himself and aims to improve his own golfing skills along with those of the people he coaches.

“It is a challenge to constantly improve your own game, you always aim to be better than the day before. It is something I try to teach my players as well, to push themselves to be better than they were the day before.”

Shaun said golfers should be able to manage their tempers, have patience and have a passion for the sport.

“At the end of the day you have to enjoy the sport. It takes time and dedication, you won’t necessarily be a great golfer right from the start.

“You should always play to the best of your capabilities and never take the sport too seriously – it is a game after all and should be enjoyed.”

Well-known South African golfer, Ernie Els, is one of the people Shaun admires, the other one is local golf coach, Jean Sadie.

“Jean has given me many opportunities and guidance throughout my golfing career. I admire Ernie because he showed me that you don’t have to be an international player to be great.”

Shaun spends his leisure time playing action cricket, hunting and fishing. He also enjoys heading to his father’s farm and spending time with his friends and family.

“I aim to play as a professional golfer more frequently in future and to help grow Jean’s golf academy, Sadie’s Golf Experience.”
