VIDEO: Walkerspruit cleanup team moves to Caledonian stadium

“It’s not just the illegal dumping but general waste is also strewn along walkways and pathways of the city.”

The second monthly clean-up of the Walkerspruit on Sunday collected over 200 bags of litter along the walkway.

Ward councilor Shaun Wilkinson, said a lot of tyres and building rubble were found in the river.

“The river is not looking good, there is still a lot of work to be done.”

“The good news is that the mayor has launched his “a re sebetseng” project which will see a lot of areas around the city getting mayoral support in the next couple of months.”

Wilkinson said the volunteers, in collaboration with the Church of God and ASEZ students from Tuks, could clean a section of the river every month.

“Next month we will be moving to another area along the Walkerspruit below Spuy street.

“This is a movement that has been started and carried on by the communities that stay around the areas, the people that live there should be accountable for the space they occupy.

“Yes, they can call the city, we have a waste department, contractors and officials but if each person cleaned the 10m in front of their property, this will change the dynamic of the city.”

He said there was a lot of rubbish and people are using the city as a dumping site.

“It’s not just illegal dumping. General waste is also strewn along walkways and pathways it’s a dilemma that only we can change. We need collective responsibility for the state of the city.”

Wilkinson said the target area of the clean-up team was the 5km radius from Brooklyn mall to Caledonian stadium, up to the Apies River and all the way to Fountains Valley.

“The Walkerspruit goes all the way from the Waterkloof Koppies to the Mozambique channel,” he said.

“We have to do something to be responsible and accountable for our section through Brooklyn into Sunnyside.”
