Elderly woman dies in ‘freak’ accident at North mall

“Upon the helicopter's arrival, the patient went into cardiac arrest and advanced life support resuscitation was initiated.”

An elderly woman died following an accident at the Kolonnade shopping centre on Wednesday afternoon, in which she was pinned against a steel structure after she was hit by a light motor vehicle.

Medi-Edge personnel rushed to the scene at the centre’s parking area at around 10:00, according to a press statement by the emergency care service.

“Upon arrival, volunteers found security staff administering first aid to the patient that suffered traumatic injuries to the lower body,” Medi Edge said.

“The patient received advanced life support treatment on the scene.”

Due to the extent of the injuries, Netcare911’s emergency medical helicopter was activated to transport the patient to a specialised hospital.

A landing zone to make way for the helicopter was established by volunteers on the roof of Kolonnade Retail Park.

“However, upon the helicopter’s arrival, the patient went into cardiac arrest and advanced life support resuscitation was initiated.”

“Unfortunately, despite resuscitation efforts, and due to the extent of the injuries, the patient passed away.”

A spokesperson for Kolonnade shopping centre management said they were deeply shocked and saddened at “the freak accident and the tragic passing of the patient”.

“Although words are of little comfort, our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this incredibly sad time,” said the centre’s marketing manager Monique Janse van Rensburg.
