The local leg of The Rugby Championship 2024, in which the Springboks will play twice against the All Blacks and once against the Pumas from Argentina on home soil, was officially launched earlier this week in Midrand during a special event organized by the main sponsor of the tournament, Castle Lager.
The Boks will host the effervescent All-Blacks in back-to-back Tests at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on 31st August and again a week later at the in Cape Town, before welcoming Argentina to Mbombela Stadium at the end of September.
Playing on home soil is always special, with sport being a passion point that brings people together like no other.
Castle Lager has a long heritage with the Springboks, and one of bringing people together around the things they love. From the tries to braais, to the celebratory cheers, South Africans have a lot to look forward to with this tournament.
The matchday at stadia promise to be a treat for fans. In addition to world-class rugby there will be activities such as Castle Scrum-a-Bakkie, Spin and Win, the Castle Accuracy challenge. The likes of Sean Fitzpatrick, Gary Teichman, John Eales, John Smit, Richie McCaw and Siya Kolisi have all lifted the coveted championship trophy. Meanwhile, legends such as Bryan Habana, Dan Carter, George Gregan, Victor Matfield, Sam Whitelock, and Michael Hooper – to name a few icons – all cut their international teeth in arguably the toughest rugby competition in the world.
Of the 28 editions thus far, the All Blacks have triumphed in 20, starting with the very first iteration now 28-years ago; and again, as recently as 2023. The Springboks and Wallabies have won four apiece, with the Boks’ last championship charge in 2019.
Recent back-to-back victories over the Wallabies, coupled with the two Castle Lager Rugby Championship matches against the All Blacks, could propel the Springboks to within touching distance of claiming their fifth crown. Crucial home and away ties against Argentina will follow, and any positive results there could see the world champions celebrate as Castle Lager Rugby Championship victors come the end of September.
