Gauteng North’s best figure skaters honoured

At a special event east of Pretoria Gauteng North's Figure Skating Association recently honoured their best performers, who despite all the challenges of the past year still delivered outstanding performances.

It’s no secret that the annual program of most sports codes suffered major damage in 2020 and 2021 and had to be dramatically scaled down due to the influence of the lockdown regulations.

Yet there are sports codes that have managed to participate and compete in these difficult times.

One such example is the Gauteng North Figure Skating Association (GNFSA), based at the Grove Mall, Cnr. Simon Vermooten and Lynnwood Road, Pretoria. This association has experienced surprising growth almost every year for the past seven years and was able to proudly present their annual awards ceremony last week.

The GNFSA’s management is outstanding and the level at which their association is managed was already reflected with their award as ‘Sports Association of the Year’ at last year’s Tshwane Women in Sports Awards, for which they beat other candidates such as the Tshwane Netball Federation, Blue Bulls Womens Rugby and Gauteng North Lifesaving.

Despite all the challenges, the GNFSA has been able to provide skaters with the opportunity to perform brilliantly at local and national level over the past year.

The keynote speaker at the awards ceremony was Winston Meyer, President of the Tshwane Sports Confederation. After a brief overview of the role his Confederation plays, Meyer was convinced that the GAFSA was succeeding brilliantly in achieving all the necessary goals.

About 18 awards and merit prizes were awarded to achievers under the jurisdiction of GSFSA during the awards ceremony.

The star of the event was probably the young Leah Snyman, who was not only named Junior Solo Skater of the Year (A Division), but also received an award from the renowned Tshwane Women in Sport Awards as School Sports Athlete of the Year. This award was presented to her by Moonira Ramathula, founder and chairperson of the Futballing Girls NPO and Vice President of the Gauteng Sports Confederation.

Snyman is the current Juvenile National Champion in the High-performance skating sections and she was constantly placed in the top three positions throughout the season.

Megan Timmerman was named Senior Solo Skater of the Year (Division A).

Other outstanding awards went to Clair Walker (Junior Ice Dance); Jaydean Brits (Senior Ice Dance); Heather McCullah (Adult Skater of the Year), Vincent Grun (Male Skater of the Year); Kira Meyer (Newcomer of the Year); Hayley Walker Administrator of the Year) and Megan Timmerman (Skaters Skater of the Year).
