SPORT: Sundowns to face the music this Friday

The Pretoria-side fielded an ineligible player and could lose a point.

Mamelodi Sundowns will make its submission before the PSL disciplinary committee in its fielding of an ineligible player case on Friday.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) preliminarily found the Pretoria outfit guilty of misconduct for including Wayne Arendse in the squad for their drawn game against Bidvest Wits in October last year, the player was subsequently also named in the starting lineup.

The PSL Disciplinary Committee also preliminarily found Arendse’s coach Pitso Mosimane guilty of misconduct for his alleged assault on AmaZulu security official Satchmo Ngwenya on 1 September 2018.

Mosimane allegedly punched Ngwenya in the face.

“Mamelodi Sundowns was charged for bringing the league into disrepute as a result of their coach’s actions,” the PSL said.

The hearing affords Sundowns the opportunity to persuade the committee its verdict was wrong.

But Mosimane has questioned the timing of the verdict, which came as the Absa Premiership title race, heated up.

PSL boss Irvin Khoza defended the timing claiming the league had followed the process as dictated by the National Soccer League (NSL) handbook, and said any perception that the league was incompetent to deal with legal actions was misplaced.

“It is about what the rules say‚ what the handbook says‚ what the compliance manual says and what club licensing says,” said Khoza.

“But for some people it appears as if we are sluggish and incompetent‚ but a lot of other issues that cause delays are due to postponements‚ some clubs get legal minds and they want further particulars‚ and you must give them those particulars.”

“Sanction will be handed down once the parties have made submissions to the committee,” the PSL said in a statement.

If the preliminary verdict is upheld, the sanction would most likely be that Downs are docked the point they won in the game.
