SPORT: Sundowns knocked off top spot after loss

A stunning freekick from Christopher Davids gave Cape Town City a 2-1 win over Sundowns in Cape Town.

Mamelodi Sundowns relinquished top spot on the league table when they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Cape Town City on Tuesday night.

City new signing Christopher Davids scored a stunning free-kick to deny Downs a share of the points at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on 88 minutes.

A week ago the two teams had met at Loftus where the Brazilians won 3-2.

On Tuesday, City needed a win to keep their title hopes alive but it was Downs who opened the scoring through inform striker Lebohang Maboe.

The home team began to press in search of the equaliser but poor finishing let them down with Siphelele Mthembu being the main culprit.

After the break, Kermit Erasmus equalised to make it three goals in three matches since his return to the PSL.

Then City goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh kept his team in the game denying Tebogo Langerman on a number of occasions.

And then with two minutes remaining, Downs conceded a freekick that Davids steered past Kennedy Mweene to give City the win.

After the game, City coach Benni McCarthy told Supersport TV that his side were not focused on winning the Absa Premier league title.

“We’re not greedy, we run our own race. We work day to day to improve ourselves and to improve as a team and then collectively. Then, when we can pick up results, it’s good but we don’t look at who is behind us and in front of us,” he said

“We only face ourselves, so for us, it’s game at a time. We want to win every game, so every team who is going to come we not just going to lie over [sic] but make it as tough as we can.”

McCarthy also said Downs were still favourites to win the league despite the loss.

Downs are second behind Orlando Pirates with a game in hand.
