LETTER: No more walk-in applications

Most people are finding out the hard way when they’re turned away from the centres and told to book online.

Good day,

In reply to your article regarding the “convenient” Online Facility for Licence renewal in April 2018.

I get online bookings for learners and drivers tests.

I also get the availability of online booking for licence renewal/replacement (would be fantastic if you could upload documents and pay online and just go in for photos and fingerprints like the home affairs online facility).

However, it makes zero sense to stop all “walk-in” applications for license renewal.

I think I found two editorials about this online one being IOL, eNatis site doesn’t even mention that they’ve now shut down all “walk-in applications” in Gauteng.

Most people are finding out the hard way when they’re turned away from the centres and told to book online.

Either someone didn’t quite think this through or the centres have completely misunderstood the minister’s directive, which was that “learners and drivers test bookings would be online only”.

I invite you to visit the online site and try to get a date at any of the major centres. There are no slots available for a majority of the license departments, e.g., Midrand; Marlboro; Randburg; Centurion; Akasia; Watloo. Yet Langlaagte has 1 936 slots available. That makes no sense!

The first available date that we could obtain was in Roodepoort (miles away from convenient) in mid- February – six weeks away, not the promised “within three days”.

Let’s also visit the fact that many don’t have access to or don’t know how to navigate the internet.

In the meantime, licenses all around Gauteng will have expired while waiting for the booking date.

And here’s the kicker: you can’t get a temporary licence unless you’ve applied for a renewal.

Laughably, this also applies in the event of your card being stolen, lost or damaged…

Um, help me out here. It’s illegal to drive without a valid driver’s licence, but you can’t get a date or a temporary license to ensure you’re legal. Never mind insurance claims being rejected left right and centre.

The reason the system is working to ease queues is that no one can get dates to queue. I think, someone needs to go back to the drawing board or adequately advise centres of what is actually going on.

Kind regards,

Tineil
