LETTER: Ideas to curb dumping

"I realise that illegal dumping is an increasing problem across the city."

I refer to an article dated 6 June, titled “Nuwe heining vir Colbyn-vleiland”.

I realise illegal dumping is an increasing problem across the metro.

My particular worry is Colbyn Valley and the National Botanical Garden – two places I pass every day.

In my opinion, a systematic approach involving more than fences and barriers are necessary. I suggest the following:

– That the metro checks whether cameras near popular illegal dumping spots could be used to spot or identify offenders.

Examples of possibly suitable cameras are those along the stretch of N1 and N4 highway opposite the botanical garden, and those at the intersection of Stanza Bopape and Cussonia.

– I once saw a lorry, after dark, dumping illegally opposite the Botanical Garden.

My attempt to get its licence number was unsuccessful.

– The metro could introduce a permit system with fees for businesses wishing to transport rubbish.

– Metro police could make a point of stopping and interrogating people transporting rubbish on bakkies or trucks.

– The metro could draw up regulations in such a way that it will be easy to impound such vehicles.

– Vehicles hauling around rubbish after dark are suspect.

– Make an example of anyone caught dumping illegally.

Put legal effort into prosecution to obtain the severest possible punishment, plus having culprits pay for the clean-up.

– Make sure successful prosecutions get publicity.
