MEC launches Green Door to help GBV victims
The aim of Green Door is to provide help to the victims of domestic violence.
Gender-based violence (GBV) victims in Mamelodi will now have access to trauma counselling and emotional containment.
MEC for community safety Faith Mazibuko officially opened Green Door, a safe space for victims in Mamelodi West on Monday.
The ribbon cutting of the Green Door took place at house no. 36 Molema Street in Moretele View.
Anna Magagane was officially appointed as the ambassador to run a victim empowerment room.
Mazibuko was joined by the management of Mamelodi West police station, crime prevention wardens, brigades, Green Doors, Siyabangena, local councillors and CPF.
The opening coincides with the 16 Days of Activism against women and children abuse.
Mazibuko encouraged the public to use Green Door and women to report abuse taking place in their homes or anywhere.
She said Green Door is part of the Gauteng government’s response to the fight against GBV and femicide.
“We urge the community of Mamelodi to support and spread the word about Green Door so that victims of GBV can get help,” she said.
She urged the station commander that communication with the local councillors, and CPF sector managers should be enhanced.
The police further encouraged the public to report such crimes at the station.
“They should not be afraid to break the silence on sexual offences and domestic violence.
We hope and believe that this information will reach the entire community and result in the reduction in this crime.”
