Operation Shanela nabs almost 400 in CBD

The operation consisted of multidisciplinary efforts across the CBD.

Motorists driving into the inner city yesterday had a tough time due to a law-enforcement campaign, Operation Shanela, near Kgosi Mampuru prison.

Between 09:00 and noon, police took 353 into custody.

The operation was not just limited to a roadblock but entailed high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections and raids on illicit liquor outlets.

Among the arrests were 66 people suspected of involvement in gender-based violence (GBV), one for murder, four foR attempted murder, nine for armed robbery and three for rape.

“Three uniformed groups, comprising two tactical teams and a roadblock group, were tasked to police the area of Pretoria Central. The tactical groups inspected five liquor premises and found all compliant with the liquor act,” said Tshwane police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.

“One person was arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes, two for possession of drugs and another two for dealing in drugs. All cigarettes and drugs confiscated will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases,” Van Dyk added.

A total of 14 premises, 963 people and 209 vehicles were searched and 362 Aarto infringement notices totalling R144 750 issued.

The Department of Labour inspected five businesses and subsequently issued all with contravention notices.

Health inspectors inspected three shops and issued all with health notices to the value of R15 000.

The operation was executed with the help of various agencies, including home affairs, labour department, Gauteng traffic, TMPD, health inspectors, Tracker, crime prevention wardens, the relevant CPFs, local councillors and various police stations operating within the Tshwane precinct.
