Water is a precious resource, please use it wisely – metro

Water restrictions have been put in place to ensure equitable water distribution in all seven regions.

As summer temperatures increase, so does the level of water consumption and demand.

The Tshwane municipality has urged its residents to use water sparingly.

This is after the municipality had put in place water restriction levels that sought to ensure that water demand didn’t exceed supply.

According to the metro, these restrictions are put in place to ensure the fair distribution and sustainable use of precious water resources.

“By adhering to these restrictions, we can collectively contribute to the conservation of water and ensure the sustainability of our water supply.

“Through the provision of uninterrupted water and sanitation services, we can maintain a healthy environment for all,” the metro said.

The municipality also encouraged residents to report leakages, as well as to take shorter showers to preserve water.

“Let us make a conscious effort to conserve water wherever possible. The everyday conservation efforts of residents and businesses will help in addressing unsustainably high water consumption, particularly during the warmer months.”

The metro said by-laws were put in place that sought to enforce these water restrictions.

Violating these by-laws would not be taken lightly and residents found breaking them would face harsh penalties.

Residents witnessing anyone violating these by-laws are advised to report it to the appropriate authorities on 012 358 7095/7096.

“Remember, water is a scarce and precious resource. It is our collective responsibility to use it wisely. Let us work together to conserve water, respect water restrictions and ensure a sustainable future for our community.

“Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we change our habits when it comes to water use. We can all make a difference by introducing one small change a day,” the metro added.

Late last month, metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo appealed to residents to apply these water conservation measures religiously as part of their lifestyle:

– Don’t water or irrigate gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems between 06:00 and 18:00.

– Don’t wash cars and don’t clean driveways or pavements using a hosepipe.

– Flush toilets only when necessary.

– Close a running tap while brushing your teeth.

– Reduce daily water usage as much as possible.

– Don’t fill swimming pools from the municipal water supply. Manually topping up swimming pools is allowed only if the swimming pool is fitted with a pool cover that prevents evaporation.
