Marabastad project nearing completion

The 1 200-unit multimillion-rand mixed-use complex is the largest social housing development in South Africa according to the metro.

The Marabastad Townlands phase 1 is currently at 92% completion and phase 2 at 84%.

Tshwane MMC for human settlements Ofentse Madzebatela announced this while on a recent inspection of the project.

Once completed, the project will yield a total of 1 200 units, making it the largest social housing development in South Africa according to the metro.

Phase 1 entailed filling the R1 500 – R3 500 housing units with the 1 232 tenants who now live closer to economic opportunities that give them easier access to employment, public transport, shopping malls and sports facilities.

Tshwane built the units to accommodate low-income earners while those who earn from R11 301 to R22 000 can apply for admission from November 1 until the development is fully occupied.

“It is important to note that only eligible applicants will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis and that the units are for rental only, with rental charges calculated based on the gross household income,” Madzebatela said.

“This flagship development will become a springboard for the revival and rejuvenation of the Marabastad area.”

Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA) representatives joined the MMC on the visit and partnered with city housing entity, Housing Company Tshwane (HCT) on the development.

HCT has started tenanting for eight completed blocks and has currently filled the 342 units.

The metro said it aims to complete the project in the first quarter of 2024.
