Tyre spiking robbery trend reoccurring, warns Sinoville CPF

Police have urged motorists to be vigilant after two incidents were reported on the N4 last Friday.

Tshwane motorists are warned to be careful when driving on national roads at night following a recurrence of tyre spiking.

Sinoville CPF said two tyre spiking incidents occurred on Friday night (October 6) both in the N4 direction of Doornpoort Plaza.

“In the first incident, the victim was changing a tyre after it was spiked when two armed men pounced and robbed him at gunpoint.”

It is alleged that the second car was spiked and the motorist came to a standstill.

“The suspects forced the victim to go into the bushes and transfer money of a substantial amount [to them].”

The following routes have been identified as spiking hotspots:

– N4 Mpumalanga to Pretoria between Solomon Mahlangu Drive and the Watermeyer off-ramp
– R80 Mabopane highway: from Rosslyn off-ramp
– N4 Pretoria to Mpumalanga between Bronkhorstspruit and Balmoral off-ramp
– N1 Polokwane N4 Mpumalanga interchange in Pretoria
– N4 to Rustenburg between R80 Mabopane freeway and Brits Plaza tollgate
– The Golden Highway
– R21 Freeway from OR Tambo International Airport to Pretoria

The CPF shared these tips for driving at night:

– Never stop if you get a puncture; instead, drive slowly to the nearest garage, while contacting the Gauteng traffic police.

– If your vehicle has had a complete breakdown, remain in the vehicle with your doors locked while seeking assistance.

– Be aware of crime hotspots and avoid them if possible.

– Avoid unsafe areas, especially at night.

– Keep an eye on the road and slow down in places that are not well-lit.

– Always keep your CPF radio with you to seek help when stranded.
