CPF in drive to reduce crime in notorious Sunnyside

The CPF has hired 136 community patrollers and its objective is to have more than 200 patrollers working in the six-sector precinct.

The Sunnyside CPF has vowed to use whatever legal means at its disposal to reduce crime in the police precinct.

“We want to ensure that we have a crime-free area in the next six months,” the CPF secretary Samuel Boshego told Rekord, adding that the body had a strategy in place to make its objective a reality.

Boshego said the plan included creating effective CPF structures, which had previously been a weakness.

He said that the youth desk, caretaker forum, patrollers, and the recently established gender-based violence brigade, led by CPF public relations officer Caroline Oyiya, are all fully operational entities for the organisation.

The CPF has hired 136 community patrollers and its objective is to have more than 200 patrollers working in the six-sector precinct.

“We need to be certain that there are patrollers in every sector.”

He stated that the recruitment for the patrollers was still underway and that locals were encouraged to apply.

Residents who want to join the patrollers can go to the police station and meet the coordinator, according to Boshego.

“You need to bring your ID to open a file, have your fingerprints taken by the police, and be vetted,” he said, citing that they do not want a situation where a criminal would join patrollers.

Working collaboratively with various partners, including SAPS, Tshwane metro police, and crime prevention wardens, according to Boshego, was a key component of their plan.

“Without collaboration with stakeholders, we could not accomplish our goal.”

In the midst of a crime issue, when criminals brandishing knives terrorise people walking along Nelson Mandela Drive, the forum made the promise to bring crime down.

Drug use and trade are problems the effort is dealing with.

This became evident when the wardens and patrollers conducted an operation that nabbed four suspects two weeks ago for possession of drugs and knives.

The suspects faced charges of possession of drugs and dangerous weapons.
