Mamelodi hospital completes 36 surgical procedures

Performing these surgeries is part of the commitment that the Gauteng health department made to have a surgical marathon every month.

Mamelodi Regional Hospital has successfully completed 36 procedures as part of the Gauteng health department’s second surgical marathon.

A total of 300 surgeries were performed across the province.

Gauteng Health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said building on the success of the first massive surgical marathon on Mandela Day (July 18), her department hosted its second surgical marathon across 23 public health facilities on Tuesday, August 29.

The procedures include arthroplasty, inguinal hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), replacement of obturator post-hemi maxillectomy, varicocelectomy, Bartholin cystectomy, umbilical incisional hernia and scoliosis, among others, will be carried out as part of the marathon.

In Mamelodi, the procedures performed so far include open reduction and internal fixation left clavicle, closed reduction right wrist, external fixation on the right knee, corneoscleral repair, total abdominal hysterectomy and cystectomy.

Modiba said the ability to perform these surgeries is an indication of the clinical skills capacity available in the department and restoring the dignity of its patients.

“Performing these surgeries is part of the commitment that the department made to have a surgical marathon every month,” he said.

Already the department surpassed its target on Mandela Day by performing 728 surgeries.

In addition, from July 19 to August 25, 10 955 surgeries were successfully performed.

The marathon is not only about reducing the backlog in the health facilities across the province but also about building capacity and skills among health practitioners.
