March for recognition of Princess Modjadji postponed

The movement spokesperson promises Pretoria residents that the rescheduled march will be devoid of violence.

The much-anticipated Inclusive Truth and Reconciliation (ITR) movement march has been postponed.

ITR organiser Tumelo Chidi said the protest that was planned for Tuesday in Arcadia, Pretoria, was postponed at the last minute due to logistical difficulties in organising and ensuring that all relevant parties attended.

“We have not abandoned the march, we have just postponed it,” Chidi said.

He said they could not continue the march to demand that President Cyril Ramaphosa recognise Princess Masalanabo Modjadji as the genuine leader of the Balobedu ethnic community since certain stakeholders were unable to attend.

“Continuing the march in their absence would be as if we were doing it for our own personal gain.”

He said that they would put all systems in place to guarantee that it goes off without a hitch next time.

“We will even check the weather to make sure we do not have any problems.”

He also promised that the march to the Union Buildings would be peaceful.

“Even when applying for the march at the metro police department, we made it clear that there would be no burning, destruction of property or aggression of any kind,” he said.

He added that Pretoria residents need not be concerned about the march.

The march, according to Tshwane metro police (TMPD), will merely cause traffic interruptions in the CBD.

The TMPD previously stated that affected streets included Farenden, Beckett, Johan, Wessels, Leyds, Zeederberg, Stanza Bopape, and Madiba. As a result, they had put in place systems to ensure that officers would be stationed in the affected streets to supervise the march.

They suggested that motorists take alternate routes such as Government Avenue, Park Street, Francis Baard Street, Arcadia Street, and Edmond Street.

The postponed march is expected to have similar consequences on Pretoria motorists as mentioned by TMPD.

According to Chidi, IRT leaders and relevant stakeholders will convene on Wednesday to evaluate the situation and determine a new date for the march.
