Using a cellphone while driving is “suicidal”, says RTMC driver educator

“Since it is illegal to answer personal or work calls while driving and it is my duty as the driver to obey the law, I refrain from doing so.”

The Road Traffic Management Cooperation (RTMC) has warned that driving while using a cellphone could result in fatalities.

“Motorists should refrain from using cellphones while driving since it puts them and other road users in danger of being killed,” RTMC driver and road safety educator Marikie Bekker said.

According to the RTMC, using a cellphone to make a call, send a text or take photographs impairs one’s ability to concentrate on the road.

Bekker contended that drivers who use their cellphone while driving frequently pay a terrible price since they run the risk of losing their life.

“If you suddenly see a child or dog crossing the road, you could lose control of the vehicle and crash to your death.”

She said answering a personal or work call while driving was detrimental to safety.

“Since it is illegal to answer personal or work calls while driving and it is my duty as the driver to obey the law, I refrain from doing so.”

Bekker also urged parents and relatives over the age of 18 to become a positive example to their children and that of others, saying that children who act badly on the road are modelling their bad behaviour.

“By crossing a red light with your child, you are modelling what to do when you are not around.”

She said that encouraging children to break traffic laws puts them at risk of passing away too soon.

Although the level of lawlessness in Gauteng is high, she said that should not deter motorists in Tshwane and anywhere in the province from following the law because it is in their own best interest to do so.
