Man allegedly attacked by taxi driver in Wonderboom

Rootman was taken to the ICU where he was treated for a broken nose and a brain hemorrhage.

Moot resident Hans Rootman was allegedly attacked by a taxi driver on Wednesday morning in Wonderboom on the M1.

Rootman said he was walking on the M1 toward the Areyeng bus station when a taxi stopped right in front of him on the curb.

“My daughter dropped me off and I was walking towards the station, when the taxi stopped right in front of me, nearly hitting me.

“I tried to squeeze past him and the next thing I knew I was on the ground and my nose was bleeding.”

Rootman alleged he was punched in the face by the taxi driver.

Rootman was taken by ambulance to the Eugene Marais ICU where he was treated for a broken nose and a brain haemorrhage.

He was kept in ICU for a day and is now recovering at home.

COMPLAINTS ABOUT TAXIS

Rootman and other Wonderboom residents have been complaining about taxis driving on the sides of the roads on the M1.

“There are children walking on this road and it’s extremely dangerous.

“We want barriers on the sides of the roads to stop this kind of behaviour before a serious incident happens.”

What further bothers Rootman is that his case could not be reported to the police during the time he was in hospital.

“My wife went to the station and they turned her away saying I must go there myself.

“Am I supposed to walk to the police station with bleeding in my brain before something gets done?”

Police have not responded to Rekord’s inquiries regarding the matter.
