Our buses are safe – Putco

“My life flashed before my eyes,” a commuter says when a bus he was travelling in failed to stop at an intersection over the weekend.

Putco suspends bus services has assured its Tshwane commuters that its fleet is safe and reliable.

This comes after a local resident, Ntsako Mashaba, detailed how a bus he boarded in Mamelodi failed to stop at the intersection over the weekend.

Mashaba said fortunately there was no traffic at the time, adding that he could not believe what he experienced.

“My life flashed before my eyes, you can imagine such an incident happening while having a conversation with a fellow passenger. Luckily the lady got it under control.”

Mashaba said fortunately the bus was not speeding at the time, adding that he was not sure if the brakes failed or the driver forgot to brake in time.

However, company spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu said the incident was still under investigation and therefore could not comment until the investigation was complete.

“What the commuter refers to as a brake failure and what the driver says, that would form part of the investigation,” Xulu added.

In terms of the safety and reliability of the buses, Xulu told Rekord that the fleet was serviced every six months.

THE PUTCO MAINTENANCE POLICY HAS SIX PILLARS:

– each and every bus is required to go for a roadworthy test by the RTMC.
– an in-house maintenance is completed every eight weeks
– the company subjects its fleet to safety inspection every three weeks
– a daily trip inspection, “which means every time a driver is about to leave the depot, the bus is checked against the checklist”, Xulu said.
– lubrication system is checked every 15 000km when oil is changed
– filters are changed every 15 000km.
