Meeting to revive Mamelodi Sports Council

“There is a lot of talent in Mamelodi, especially in sports, but we are unable to identify them. Our children are no longer interested because of a lack of facilities or vandalised sport facilities,” Masemola said.

Different sporting codes in Mamelodi are invited to attend a meeting reviving the Mamelodi Sports Council (Masco) in region 6.

The meeting will be held at the Mamelodi West community hall on March 23 at 18:00 to discuss ways to revive Masco and to identify active different sporting codes in the area.

Solly Masemola from Masco said sports in Mamelodi are slowly dying.

“We want recreational facilities to different sporting codes. There is a lot of talent in Mamelodi, especially in sports, but we are unable to identify them because our children are no longer interested because of a lack of facilities or vandalised sports facilities around Mamelodi,” Masemola said.

“In the past, we used to have different school sports activities and we had competition after competition throughout the years keeping children busy. Many have succeeded in life because of sports.”

He said the meeting is to discuss abandoned and dilapidated sports facilities around Mamelodi that have been turned into a hideout for criminals.

“The sports facilities in Mamelodi were abandoned and vandalised because security has been removed.

“We want the City of Tshwane to hand over these facilities to Masco who will look after them,” said Masemola.

Jackson Masango from Masco further said, “Our main mandate is to revive the organisation that was formed in the 1980s.

“The meeting is about identifying all sporting codes in Mamelodi and understanding their challenges.

“We no longer have school sports and athletics in Mamelodi to keep our children busy away from the streets and avoid teenage pregnancies,” he said.

Masemola added Masco will help promote sports in Mamelodi but the City of Tshwane need to give back the sports facilities to Masco to look after these facilities.

The previous meeting was held on Thursday at the Mamelodi community hall and was attended by different sports legends who also touched on the raising of the HM Pitje stadium.
