Wierdabrug police apprehend 50 suspects

“As the police we pledged to serve the best interest of the community.”

Wierdabrug police have arrested 50 suspects so far this month as part of operation O Kae Molao.

Police spokesperson Divine Nkuna said 45 suspects were men and five women.

“The majority were arrested for drinking in public with shoplifters coming in second,” Nkuna said adding that the rest of the arrests were for reckless driving, child abuse and possession of dagga.

Nkuna said the police will “at all material times serve the best interests of the community, as they pledged to do so”.

“As the police, we took a pledge that we will keep our communities safe, and rid our society of criminals. We also promised to act honestly and responsibly at all times,” she added.

The police recently vowed to increase police visibility in the area in an effort to combat crime this festive season.

Earlier in November, a joint operation between police and home affairs department resulted in the arrest of 25 illegal immigrants.

At the time Brigadier Samuel Thine described the operation as “successful” after a suspect was arrested for possession of “hardcore” drugs.

Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela applauded the operation which he said has yielded positive results in terms of apprehending a wide variety and number of wanted suspects.

“The police have done extremely well, we managed to arrest 987 wanted suspects,” Mawela said.
